1200 Acres Agricultural Land May Be Uncultivable

Due to the lack of proper drainage at the right time, there are fears that around 122 acres of agricultural land in 8 villages of Chandpur and Faridganj upazilas will remain unmanned under the irrigation project. In this situation, farmers of those villages have been in extreme danger with Boro rice seedlings. News from Elshpad.

Upon visiting the ground, it is seen that around 1200 acres of land still exists in the surrounding area, including Ghaspur Char, Charamatki, Bashtali East and West Char, Chandrapaki, Chandra Char and Sekidi Char in Chandpur and Faridganj Upazilas. Farmers said no such situation had occurred in the past year.

Farmers Yunus Talukder, Shafiqur Rahman, Delwar Hossain Mizi, other farmers of Ghasipur area, said that the problem was caused by the irrigation of agricultural land through the Charbagadi and Hajimara pumps of the Water Development Board. Farmers Haji Joynal Abedin, Dulal Talukder, Bashir Ullah and others said they had encountered the problem due to the involvement of Badrul Molla with brick and cement traders inside the irrigation project.

Farmers also said that inside the irrigation scheme for traders in the neighboring Bagra Bazar, water are not being extracted through internal pumps to facilitate the running of small trawlers. And for this, farmers have to pay compensation.

Chairman of Bagadi Union parishod Belayet Hossain Gazi Bilal said that he had informed the concerned people several times about the suspicion of being an agricultural land. But they did not listen.

Badruddin Molla, who is in charge of the pump in the mechanical section of the Chandpur Irrigation Project, said problem was the release of water from the lake to cultivate the fish. He claimed that water was being routed through the pump at the switch gate. Holding water in conjunction with someone is baseless, he added.

In this regard, the current executive engineer of the mechanical department of the irrigation project Ruhul Amin said, ‘Some people are having problems with the closure of the canal gate at different places for fish farming. He also said, ‘There was water below the large canal at various points of the project and look after the matter seriously.
