The century-old ‘Hajiganj Big Mosque’ in Chandpur, famous for its beautiful and charming architectural style. According to historical information, on 17 Ashwin 1337 B.E., Mao. Abul Farah Jainpuri (R.A.) laid the foundation stone of this mosque. The beauty of the mosque fascinates the worshippers and visitors.
The mehrab of the Hajiganj Big Mosque is decorated with pieces of glass. Surah Yasin and Surah Juma are written in Arabic letters in a circle on the first part of the inner wall of the mosque. In 1953, the 122-foot-high minaret was placed on four pillars. There is a main gate at the foot of this minaret, which amazes thoughtful people. One can climb to the very top of the minaret by using the spiral staircase from inside. There is a lantern-like top and a two-handed circular platform at a considerable height.
The main gate design and the beautiful Kalima design of the entrance to the mosque from the main road of Hajiganj Bazar have increased the splendor of the mosque many times.
Ahmad Ali Patwari (may Allah be pleased with him) built the huge mosque from the mihrab to the towering minaret of this holy mosque without any engineers in his life. The place where the sermon is delivered is decorated with precious stones and tiles. There are three star-studded domes on the minaret and the mosque. The call to prayer is broadcasted with about 20 microphones every day.
The area of the Hajiganj Baro Mosque is 28 thousand square feet. There is a separate prayer space for women in this mosque. Every Friday, thousands of people gather from different parts of the district and the country to offer Friday prayers, and in the month of Ramadan, millions of devotees offer prayers together on Jumatul Bidayah.
The Khatib of the mosque, Mufti Mohammad Abdur Rauf, said that this historic mosque was first a one-room prayer house. Later, two tin halls were built. The first Friday azan was given on 10 Agrahayan in 1344. The then Chief Minister of undivided Bengal AKM Fazlul Haque, Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy, Nawab Mosharraf Hossain and Nawabzada Khwaja Nasrullah were present on the first Friday prayer. Pir-e-Kamel Alhaj Mao. Abul Bashar Jainpuri (Rah.) led the prayer. By the infinite mercy of Allah, this mosque has been elevated to its present position.
Currently, the Hajiganj Historical Mosque Complex is being formed to conduct mosque-centric religious and social activities. The current Motawali is the founder and Waqif Ahmed Ali Patwari (Rah.) grandson Dr.Mohammad Alamgir Kabir Patwari’s eldest son Alhaj Prince Shakeel Ahmed. His younger brother Barrister Shahriar Ahmed is also by his side all the time. 6 -12- 25
