Naval police have arrested 45 people including 15 bulkheads in Chandpur. The operation was carried out in Mohanpur and its environs on the Meghna river in Chandpur at midnight on Monday.
Chandpur Naval Police Superintendent Mohammad Kamruzzaman confirmed the matter.
According to the naval police, sand-carrying bulkheads pose a threat to passengers and other vessels at night due to a lack of necessary navigation equipment and skilled pilots.
This often leads to accidents. When the matter came to the notice of the concerned authorities, the naval police became active.
In view of this, the special operation was launched on the instructions of Chief Additional Inspector General of Naval Police Safiqul Islam.
Naval Superintendent of Police Mohammad Kamruzzaman said, “Bulkheads were operating illegally at night in Padma-Meghna and Dakatiya. Special operations were conducted to prevent that. At that time 12 bulkheads seized and 27 people were arrested.”
The naval police superintendent further said, “Two and a half lakh illegal current nets were also seized during the operation. These have been burned and destroyed. A case is being registered against all the detainees.”
