The city protection dam of Chandpur has suddenly collapsedd. The 50-meter cc block of the dam collapsed into the river Meghna.
The landslide took place at 6 am on Sunday morning on the west bank of the launch ghat in the Tilabari area of the 6 no. ward of Chandpur Municipality. The locals are terrified.
It is learned that the city protection dam on the west side of Chandpur Launch Ghat suddenly sank in the morning.
The locals immediately became alarmed to see the matter and immediately informed the concerned officials about the matter. Local residents living in government places are now in fear of disruption.
Upon receiving the news, the mayor Zillur Rahman Jewel, Panel Mayor and Local Councilor Farida Ilias, District Awami League Vice-President Tafazzal Hossain Esdu Patwary, and other leaders quickly visited the scene.
They assured the locals not to panic and to take courageous action immediately.
Additional Executive Engineer of the Water Development Board Mamun Hawladar said, “As soon as I heard the news of the incident, I went to the spot. The affected area has already been surveyed and the matter has been reported to the higher authorities. The people concerned will be able to confirm the cause of the breach through investigation.
He added that we have 4,000 Geo bags and 14,000 cc blocks for repairs. Erosion will be controlled through rapid dumping. However, there is no reason to be afraid as the river is not rough. The situation is under our control.
