Death in police custody: The first verdict in the history of the country today.The verdict in the case will be given on Wednesday, six years after the beating to death of a young man named Johnny in police custody at Pallabi police station in the capital. This will be the first verdict in a case of death in police custody in the history of the country.

On August 25, Dhaka Metropolitan Division Judge KM Imrul Kayes fixed the date of the verdict after presenting the arguments of the accused. Arguments in the case began on February 23 and ended on August 25. Earlier, 24 witnesses testified in the case.

Johnny was taken to the police station on February 08, 2014 and tortured. At one point, Johnny became physically ill and was admitted to a hospital in the capital. When his condition deteriorated, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared Johnny dead.

Johnny’s younger brother Imtiaz Hossain Rocky filed a case against eight people, including Pallabi Police Station OC Ziaur Rahman, under the Torture and Death in Police Custody Act at the Dhaka Metropolitan Division Judge’s Court in August 2014. On April 17, 2016, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Division Judge Kamrul Hossain Mollah framed charges against Pallabi Police Station SI Zahidur Rahman Zahid, ASI Rashedul, ASI Kamruzzaman Mintu, Source Sumon and Rashed.
