EC formation bill passed in parliament

The much-discussed bill on the formation of the Election Commission has been passed in the parliament, with the provision of forming a search panel to appoint the chief election commissioner and commissioners.

Law Minister Anisul Huq has tabled the bill on Thursday when Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury approved the minister’s request to consider the bill. It was later passed by voice vote.

On Wednesday, the president of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Shahiduzzaman Sarkar brought the bill in the House with two amendment recommendations.

The president will sign the bill now and Bangladesh will get its first law on appointing the chief election commissioner and commissioners.

Law Minister presented the bill to the parliament on Sunday. It was then forwarded to the parliamentary panel to scrutinize it and submit a report back to the parliament in a week.
