Cabinet directed the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to bring down the import duty on items to a reasonable level to keep the prices of daily commodities including edible oil within reach of the people.
The directive was given at a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday. In the meeting held at the Secretariat, the Prime Minister gave instructions by joining through video conference from Ganobhaban.
Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam told reporters this information at the end of the meeting.
The secretary said, “An inter-ministerial meeting on Sunday decided to withdraw VAT at the consumer level.
The Cabinet today discussed the withdrawal of import duty on daily commodities including edible oil.
The Prime Minister has given some instructions in this regard. It has been asked to reduce the import duty till further orders.”
