Former Sudanese Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi died

Former Sudanese Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi, 84, has died of a coronavirus infection.

The country’s National Ummah Party (NUP) said in a brief statement on Thursday (November 26).

He died at a hospital in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the statement said. He was hospitalized for more than three weeks.

Sadiq al-Mahdi was admitted to a hospital in Sudan last month after being infected with the coronavirus, the Anadolu Agency reported. He was later transferred to a hospital in the UAE for follow-up treatment.

Al-Mahdi served as prime minister twice, in 1967 and 1986-89, before being ousted in a coup led by former President Omar al-Bashir.

He has led NUP for nearly five decades.
