14 people have been killed so far in an avalanche in India’s Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district. In addition, 170 people are reported missing. Several indian media reported this news on Monday, February 08.
After the avalanche on Sunday, February in the morning, the water level of Dhauliganga River increased near Joshimath.
Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Om Prakash told that 150 workers were working on the Rishiganga power grid project at the time of the incident. Many of them may have floated in the water.
Upon receiving the news, a rescue team of 200 people from the Indo-Tibetan Border Guard Force reached the spot. A red alert has already been issued on the road from Chamoli to Rishikesh.
Uttarakhand Police DG Ashok Kumar said 12 people were rescued from a small tunnel in Tapoban. Efforts are being made to reopen the large tunnels that were closed due to the current.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that he had spoken to the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. He is keeping an eye on the whole matter.
“The whole country is on the side of Uttarakhand,” Modi tweeted.
“The countrymen are praying for the endangered people of Uttarakhand. I myself have spoken to the disaster response forces. I am keeping abreast of every moment of the rescue operation.”
