Last day to file income tax Return today

The last day to file an income tax return is Monday, November 30. Despite rumors of an extension for several days, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Sunday said it would not extend the time.

NBR chairman Abu Hena Rahmatul Munim told a press conference on Sunday that the last day for submitting returns is November 30.

The NBR chairman said those who are unable to file their income tax returns within the stipulated time can apply to the concerned tax office. However, the issue of 2 percent fine is not mandatory. The fine will be waived if the customer can show a logical reason why he could not submit the return on time. If the reason does not seem reasonable to the commissioner, then the fine has to be calculated.

He said the return has increased by 63,199 till November 28 this year as compared to November 26 last year. However, income tax has decreased by Tk. 193 crore at the same time.

Under the Income Tax Act, the Deputy Commissioner of Taxes may give two months to file a return on the application of the taxpayer. However, the taxpayer has to pay a penalty of two percent in that case.
