At least 40 worshipers have been burnt in an AC blast at Talla Bara Mosque in Khanpur area of Narayanganj city.
Of these, 37 injured has been admitted to the National Burn and Plastics Institute.
The incident took place during Esha prayers on Friday, September 04.Doctors at Victoria General Hospital said the condition of many of the victims was critical.
According to the locals, the AC exploded with a loud noise during Esha prayers. At the same time fire spread in the bodies of the worshipers. The injured were rushed to Victoria General Hospital in the city and the critically injured to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Abdullah Al Arefin, assistant director of the Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defense, said the blast was caused by a gas leak in the air conditioning at the end of the Esha prayers. There was an air-conditioning pipe connection through the floor of the mosque.
The pipe was leaking and gas was coming out in the form of bubbles. The explosion may have been caused by an electric spark when someone tried to turn on a switch in the electric line as the doors and windows were closed. He said more than 50 people were injured in the incident.
According to the locals, the AC of the mosque exploded during the munajat after the Esha prayers on Friday. At that time there were about 50-60 worshipers in the mosque. Many were found naked and their bodies glowing as they rushed out after the blast. Many were seen coming out crying. The floor of the mosque was seen covered in blood.
