Chandpur’s mustard production target is 5,824 MT

Chandpur is one of the major riverine agricultural regions of the country. The Meghna, Padma, Meghna, Dhanagoda and Dakatia rivers flow through this district, so agricultural production is widespread in the river basins. Mustard is cultivated and produced on a large scale in the areas adjacent to the river banks. There are 11 isolated char areas on the west bank of the Meghna.

In Chandpur, mustard is the second largest crop after paddy, jute, potato, soybean, onion, garlic and corn. In the current 2025-26 year, a mustard production target of 5,824 MT has been set in Chandpur and the target for cultivation is 4,160 hectares of land.

Due to favorable weather conditions, transportation facilities, farmers’ interest in mustard cultivation, provision of production technology by the Agriculture Department, improved communication system, easy availability of agricultural equipment, advice from agronomists on the use of seeds, fertilizers and pesticides, provision of agricultural loans from banks, etc., farmers in Chandpur are cultivating mustard on a large scale. Especially in the char areas of Chandpur, farmers cultivate and produce mustard extensively.

It is a matter of great sadness that banks are not giving agricultural loans to farmers in the char areas because they are located near the river. The char areas are – Char Elliot, Char Kasim, Sabji Kandi, Zahirabad, Shastakhand Borochar, Rajrajeswar,Jahajmara, Lagnimara, Banshgari, Chirarchar, Fatejongpur, Haimchar, Ishanbala, Madhyachar, Sahebbazar Chargazipur Manipur, Majhirbazar and Baburchar etc. Mustard is cultivated in large quantities.

According to the sources of the Department of Agricultural Extension, Khamar Bari Chandpur, the cultivation target in Chandpur Sadar is 500 hectares and the production target has been set at 710 million tons.

In Matlab North, 1,555 hectares have been cultivated and the production target has been set at 2,280 million tons. In Matlab South, cultivation is 310 hectares and the production target has been set at 440 MT.

In Hajiganj, cultivation is 675 hectares and the production target has been set at 960 MT. In Shahrasti, cultivation is 200 hectares and the production target has been set at 284 MT.

In Kachua, cultivation is 510 hectares and the production target has been set at 724 MT. In Faridganj, cultivation is 175 MT and the production target has been set at 249 MT and in Haimchar, cultivation is 225 hectares and the production target has been set at 319 MT.

Bangladesh Bank has allocated over Tk 3 crore for agricultural credit and poverty alleviation in all the state-owned and private banks in the 8 upazilas of Chandpur in the fiscal year 2025-26.

Deputy Assistant Agricultural Officer of the Chandpur Agricultural Extension Department, Md. Mobarak Hossain, said that there is a possibility of extensive mustard cultivation in Chandpur this time. Farmers have benefited from this year’s price. I hope the production will be as per the target. This time the government has given seeds, fertilizers and cash as incentives. This time the farmers will be able to use the incentives and utilize agricultural production.
