Today is the death anniversary of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.Kazi Nazrul Islam is our national poet. Today is Thursday, his 44th death anniversary. On this day (12 Bhadra, 1383 BS) he passed away at the then PG Hospital (now Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University) in Dhaka at the age of 77 years. Today, the nation will remember the beloved poet known as ‘Rebel Poet’ with utmost respect and love.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave a separate message on the occasion of the death anniversary of the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.Although all official events are closed due to the global pandemic coronavirus infection, there are some events on the National Poet’s Death Anniversary. There is a formality of paying homage at the grave of the poet. Bangla Academy has also organized a discussion program.
Kazi Nazrul Islam was born on 11 Joistho, 1306 BS (14 May, 1899 AD) in the village of Churulia in Asansol subdivision of Burdwan district in West Bengal. He was anointed with extraordinary talent out of relentless poverty. He was awarded the title of ‘Rebel Poet’ for his lifelong rebellious views and vocal voice against injustice. He fought all his life for the liberation of the exploited people. Just as rebellious in writing, so is life. He was vocal against sectarianism, bigotry, superstition and bigotry. To the youth he is the eternal symbol of rebellion. Although he contributed to all branches of literature including music, drama, short stories and novels, he is mainly known as a poet. His songs have added a different dimension to Bengali songs.
In 1972, on the initiative of the then President of Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, with the permission of the Government of India, the poet Nazrul and his family were brought to Bangladesh and arranged for his residence with state status. Bangabandhu was given the status of national poet. In 1974, Dhaka University conferred the degree of D.Litt on Kazi Nazrul Islam for his contribution to Bengali literature and culture. He was later awarded the state Ekushey Padak.
Various organizations have taken detailed programs on the occasion of the death anniversary of the national poet. These include wreath-laying at the grave of the poet, recitation of Fateha and discussion. Various political parties have taken program to pay homage to the poet’s grave.
Bangla Academy has organized a solo lecture and cultural program at the Academy’s Seminar Room at 11:00 am today. Nazrul Institute has organized a virtual seminar and prayer mahfil at 10:00 am.
