New Zealand suspended political-military ties with Myanmar

New Zealand has suspended high-level political and military ties with Myanmar over its military coup. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern made the announcement at a news conference on Tuesday, February 9.

At the same time, Jacinda Ardern said that Myanmar’s military leaders would soon be banned from traveling to New Zealand. In addition, none of New Zealand’s ongoing assistance programs in Myanmar will support the country’s military.

Meanwhile, New Zealand Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta said in a separate statement that they do not recognize the legitimacy of Myanmar’s military-led government. She called for the immediate release of all political leaders detained by Myanmar’s military and called for the immediate restoration of civilian rule in the country.
