12,000 People Will Die Due To Hunger Every Day: Oxfam

12,000 people will die due to hunger every day: Oxfam. The international charity Oxfam has warned that more people will die due to starvation than die from coronavirus infection.

In a new report released on Thursday,July 09 they says these people will die this year from the food crisis caused by the adverse effects of the coronavirus epidemic.

According to the report, the impact of the lockdown will be compounded by widespread unemployment, declining incomes, disrupted food production and reduced humanitarian aid. Last year, 821 million people suffered from food insecurity, of which 149 million faced crisis-level hunger or worse. But now the dramatic recession of the economy and strict restrictions on movement are the cause of people’s unemployment. Oxfam has highlighted this fear in a report titled ‘The Hunger Virus’.

The report lists ten hungry hotspots around the world, including Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen and South Sudan. Even in middle-income countries like India, South Africa and Brazil, millions of people are starving.

Sana, a mother of four and owner of a hair salon in Yemen, told the charity: “I haven’t had a client at my salon for the past few months. I’ve been cutting costs and rents for two months and buying food on credit. I don’t know what to do.”

War-torn Yemen is facing the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with two-thirds of the population starving and more than two million children suffering from moderate or severe malnutrition.

Danny Sriskandarajah, chief executive of Oxfam GB, said the effects of the corona have pushed millions of the world’s poorest people into hunger and poverty. Governments now fund the United Nations Corona Appeal Fund and can save lives by ending the conflict in response to the epidemic.

Earlier in April, Oxfam reported that the Corona epidemic could push 50 crore people worldwide into poverty.
