‘Poisoning’ in seedbed, death of more than 100 pigeons at Haimchar

More than 50 pigeons have been reported to have died due to poisoning in the soybean seedbed at Haimchar in Chandpur.

The incident took place on Saturday, February 26 at the crop field of farmer Swapan Dewan of Purbachar Krishnapur village in Algi Durgapur South Union No. 3 of the Upazila.

Locals allege that the landowner used the poison with the soybean seeds. They expressed anger after rescuing the dead birds.

The locals complained that during the cultivation of paddy, rice, wheat, pulses, and soybeans in the rural crop fields, different kinds of birds including pigeons could be seen. Now, these birds are no longer seen as before.

But some pigeons came to eat soybeans, they were also killed by poison.

Although reporters tried to contact the farmer concerned, he was not found.

Haimchar Upazila Agriculture Officer Debabrata Sarkar told that killing any bird including pigeons by applying poison is not only a crime but also very harmful to the environment. We will take legal action against those who have committed this inhuman act.
