Shafiqul’s plastic bottle house in Cumilla.Shafiqul Islam of Homna Municipality of Cumilla has built a house with abandoned plastic bottles. People are coming from a distance to take a look at the plastic bottle house. The roof of the house is under construction, but in the meantime the area has become the focus of discussion.
In Serejamin, a five-room house was constructed on the right side of the road with small plastic bottles of different colors. Passengers on the road stopped at a glare. He approached the house and touched it.
Pedestrians have asked many questions about why such a strong and spectacular design can be built with abandoned plastic bottles. Police member Shafiqul Islam answered these questions logically.
Shafiqul Islam said, in a national newspaper, on 2011, a report was made in Japan about a three-story house with plastic bottles. From that time, the curiosity in his mind increased. He later decided to make a home with plastic bottles after seeing various uses of plastic bottles on YouTube. It was from this thinking that he started construction of a house.
He said that 80,000 plastic bottles have been used so far to construct the house. He bought one lakh abandoned bottles from different thrift shops in Dhaka and Comilla and filled them with sand. With these bottles of sand, the base builds more than two and a half feet below the ground. Then he built a wall on it.
Asked about the specialty of the house, Shafiqul Islam said that the roof will be full of beauty after the roof. However, the earthquake will not hurt the house. Also, if there is a fire, the plastic will not spread around because of the sand inside the plastic.
Shafiqul also mentioned that the indoor environment will be cold and warm during winter because of the sand in the bottle. Responding to a question about the cost of building a house with plastic bottles, Shafiqul Islam said that it is possible to build a house at a cost of at least five percent less than the cost of a paved house made of brick cement.
Asked about this, Homona Upazila Engineer Zahirul Islam said, “I have heard of a house made of plastic bottles.” At the end of the visit, I can tell you what the permanence of the house will be like.
