Chandpur sweet potato production target this year is 8 thousand MT

A target has been set for the cultivation and production of sweet potatoes in Chandpur. The cultivation and production target for 2025-26 is 8 thousand MT on 360 hectares of land in all upazilas of the district. This information has been revealed according to the annual report of the cultivation and production target for the 2025-2026 Rabi season of the Department of Agricultural Extension, Khamar Bari Chandpur.

Chandpur is one of the major riverine agricultural regions of the country. As the Meghna, Padma, Meghna Dhanagoda and Dakatia rivers flow through this district, extensive crops are produced in the river basins for agricultural production. This year, a production target of 8 thousand MT has been set for Chandpur. The cultivation target is on 360 hectares of land. Farmers of Chandpur generally cultivate sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes can be cultivated in char areas if farmers are given credit support. There is a demand for it among the common people. It is possible to cultivate it extensively in areas such as Char Elliot, Char Kasim, Shasht Khand Borochar, Borochar, Rajrajeswar, Jahajmara, Lagmimara, Banshgari, Chirarchar, Fatejongpur, Ishanbala, Chargazipur, Manipur, Madhyachar, Majhirbazar, Sahebbazar and Baburchar of Matlab Sadar.

According to sources from the Department of Agricultural Extension, Khamar Bari, Chandpur, 118 hectares of cultivation has been set in Chandpur Sadar and the production target has been set at 2,596 MT. In Matlab Uttar, 75 hectares have been cultivated and the production target has been set at 1,650 MT. In Matlab Dakshin, cultivation is 15 hectares and the production target has been set at 330 MT, in Hajiganj, cultivation is 16 hectares and the production target has been set at 352 MT. In Shahrasti, cultivation is 8 hectares and the production target has been set at 176 MT. In Kachua, cultivation is 8 hectares and the production target has been set at 176 MT. In Faridganj, cultivation is 65 hectares and the production target has been set at 1430 MT. In Haimchar, cultivation is 55 hectares and the production target has been set at 1210 MT.

On the other hand, due to the favorable weather environment, transportation facilities, provision of production technology by the Agriculture Department, improved communication system, easy availability of agricultural inputs, advice from agronomists on the use of seeds, fertilizers and pesticides, provision of agricultural loans from banks, etc., the farmers of Chandpur produce and cultivate agricultural products on a large scale. Farmers produce sweet potatoes, especially in the Matlabe and Haimchar areas of Chandpur. Sweet potatoes can be cultivated at low cost and easily. It is widely cultivated in the char areas. Sandy soil and humid riverside areas are suitable for sweet potato cultivation.

Its cultivation is possible without fertilizer and water irrigation. Therefore, agronomists say that the soil and climate of the char areas of Chandpur are suitable for sweet potato cultivation. According to doctors, sweet potatoes are a delicious alternative to rice. They contain vitamins A, C and minerals. Which are not found in rice. Protein, carbohydrates, calcium, iron, vitamin 1, vitamin 2 are needed by the human body. Eating sweet potatoes will fulfill its needs.
