Passenger trawler sank in Chandpur, woman missing

The trawler sank after being hit by a passenger launch named MV Lamia at the Meghna-Dakatiya river in Chandpur. The accident happened at noon on Friday, November 5.

Although all the passengers in the trawler came ashore, the passenger named Nasima Begum (35) is still missing.

It is learned that Nasima Begum is the wife of Saleh Ahmed of North Tarabunia village under Sakhipur police station in Shariatpur district. Members of the Naval Police, Coast Guard, and Fire Service are conducting rescue operations in the incident.

Additional Superintendent of Police Belayet Hossain Sikder of Chandpur said the launch MV Lamia left Ghosherhat in Shariatpur for Chandpur in the morning. The launch hit a passenger trawler while crossing the Molhead, the confluence of the Dakatiya-Meghna river, at noon and the trawler sank in the river.

At that time, all the 10-12 passengers in the trawler were able to swim ashore, but one passenger named Nasima Begum went missing after drowning. We are conducting an operation to rescue the missing passenger. After the incident, the launch was intercepted from the Meghna river in the Mohanpur area. He said legal action would be taken in this case.

Chandpur District Port Officer Kaysarul Islam said the trawler used to transport passengers from Natunbazar to the Puranbazar area on the Dakatiya river. 3-4 passengers of the trawler were injured in the collision and were taken to Chandpur Sadar Hospital for treatment.
