Former Deputy Speaker Shawkat Ali passes away

Former Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, one of the accused in the Agartala conspiracy case, freedom fighter Colonel (retd) Shawkat Ali MP is no more. Shawkat Ali died at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka at 9:30 am on Monday, November 16 while on life support, Jatiya Sangsad Director (Public Relations) Md. Tariq Mahmood informed this matter.

Shawkat Ali, 84, was suffering from kidney, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and pneumonia. For these reasons, he had to undergo treatment at CMH for some time.

Retired Colonel Shawkat Ali was elected Member of Parliament six times from Shariatpur-2 constituency. Shawkat Ali was also accused in the Agartala conspiracy case filed against Bangabandhu in 1969 during the Pakistan period.

Shawkat Ali is the founding chairman of Muktijoddha Sanghati Parishad and the chief advisor of 71 Foundation.

Meanwhile, President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader and Deputy Minister for Water Resources Enamul Haque Shamim have expressed their condolences over the death of Shawkat Ali.
