Modi’s phone to Sheikh Hasina.Dhaka and Delhi have pledged to work together to increase food production to address the potential crisis caused by the coronavirus epidemic.

The two leaders made the pledge when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi telephoned Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday afternoon.

Later, Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim told reporters.

He said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at 5:50 pm today and wished her and the people of Bangladesh a Happy Bengali New Year and the holy month of Ramadan. The Prime Minister of Bangladesh also congratulated the Prime Minister of India and the people on the occasion of Ramadan.

In a 12-minute telephone conversation, the two leaders noted the steps taken by the two governments to increase food production to address the potential food crisis caused by the coronavirus epidemic. They said the two countries would work together to increase production if necessary.

Sheikh Hasina said various international organizations, including the United Nations, fear that the situation could be prolonged. Therefore, all the countries in the region have to work together to deal with the situation.

Both the Prime Ministers appreciated the steps taken by both the countries to tackle the Coronavirus epidemic and reiterated their commitment to work together in this regard.

In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, Sheikh Hasina and Narendra Modi agreed in a video conference held in March to take forward the SAARC countries’ initiatives against Covid-19.

The Prime Minister also thanked Narendra Modi for sending medicines and other medical supplies to Bangladesh to combat COVID-19.

The Prime Minister of India paid deep tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the occasion of his birth centenary, said Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim.
