One person has died in Dhaka due to symptoms of black fungus, according to the authorities of BIRDEM General Hospital. He died at the hospital three days ago.
Professor M Delwar Hossain, head of the department of respiratory medicine at BIRDEM General Hospital, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Post on Tuesday, May 25.
He said one patient died three days ago. We think they died of black fungus. We did the tests after he died, the report of which we have not yet received. However, the lab reported that the patient had black fungus.
Delwar Hossain said the deceased had uncontrolled diabetes and kidney problems. He recovered after contracting coronavirus. It was not understood at the time of treatment that he was suffering from mucormycosis. It is known after death.
According to the hospital authorities, the examination showed that the patient was suffering from mucormycosis or black fungus along with other diseases. A patient infected with black fungus is still hospitalized in BIRDEM. Another patient who was identified has gone to another hospital.
Recently, this rare fungal disease has spread in India. This news also created concern in Bangladesh. Meanwhile, news came that two people were infected.
According to BIRDEM Hospital sources, on May 08, a 45-year-old patient was diagnosed with black fungus. On May 23, another 60-year-old man was diagnosed with the fungal disease.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Vice-Chancellor Prof. Md. Sharfuddin Ahmed said that black fungus refers to various diseases caused by a special type of microscopic fungal infection. Although the fungus is ubiquitous spread through soil, water, and air it is so contagious that it can infect only one or two people in a million. Only when the body’s immune system is weakened for some reason can the level of the infection increase, which can be as high as 20 to 30 lakh people.
