This year’s Soybean production target in Chandpur is 3 and a half thousand MT. Chandpur is one of the major riverine agricultural areas of the country. The river Meghna, Padma, Meghna, Dhanagoda, and Dakatiya flow through the district.
Soybean has been cultivated in 3 Upazilas of the district this year. Chandpur Sadar, Faridganj and Haimchar upazilas. Of these, most soybeans are cultivated at Haimchar. Chandpur Sadar is followed by paddy, jute, potato, onion, garlic, mustard, and then soybean.
According to sources in the Agriculture Extension Department’s farmhouse in Chandpur, “Soybean production target has been set at 330 MT in Chandpur Sadar and Faridganj Upazilas of Chandpur this year. The target for cultivation is 627 MT hectares. The cultivation and production rate of 1,420 hectares in Haimchar has been 2,698 MT.”
Due to favorable climate, transportation facilities, the interest of farmers in mustard cultivation, provision of production technology by the agriculture department, improved communication system, easy availability of agricultural implements, advice of agriculturists on use of seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides, provision of agricultural loans from banks, etc Chandpur farmers are cultivating mustard on a large scale.
Farmers produce soybeans on a large scale, especially in the chars of Chandpur. Unfortunately, the banks are not giving agricultural loans to the farmers in the char areas as they live on the banks of the river.
The char areas are Rajrajeswar of Chandpur Sadar, Jahajmara, Fatehjangpur, Ishanbala of Nilkamal in Haimchar, Chargazipur, Manipur, Madhya char, Majhirbazar, Sahebbazar, and Babur char, etc.
Abdul Mannan, an agronomist in the Chandpur agriculture department, told the Chandpur Times: The climate and soil of the Char area are suitable for soybean cultivation.
