Attack on naval police during eviction of bamboo jugs in Meghna

Chandpur naval police have removed bamboo jugs to keep the navigability of the Padma-Meghna and Dakatia rivers normal.

More than 500 jugs of the riverside unions of Sadar were evicted on Wednesday afternoon under the leadership of Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nauthana Mujahidul Islam.

During the eviction operation of the naval police, more than a hundred fishermen of Kalyanpur union of Chandpur Sadar attacked the naval police. At that time, two workers engaged in the work of removing bamboo jugs were injured.

Chandpur Nauthana OC Mohammad Mujahidul Islam said fishermen had set up hundreds of illegal bamboo jugs in the Padma-Meghna and Dakatiya rivers in Chandpur.

This is hampering the movement of ships and threatening the fish on free-flowing. Apart from this, the movement of ships has been threatened due to this jugs.

The OC further said that when we went on the eviction drive, reckless fishermen threw bricks and sticks to us. Two workers working with us were injured. All bamboo jugs will be removed from the river in phases.
