Court sentenced five people to death for killing writer Avijit Roy

Court has sentenced five people to death and one to life in prison for killing writer Avijit Roy.

Judge Mojibur Rahman of the Dhaka Anti-Terrorism Tribunal pronounced the verdict in the case on Tuesday, February 16 in the afternoon.

Four of the six accused in the case were present in court when the verdict was announced. The other two are fugitives.

The convicts are: Major Zia and Akram Hossain alias Abir alias Adnan alias Hasibul alias Abdullah, Abu Siddique Sohail, Mozammel Hussain alias Simon and Arafat Rahman.

Besides, the court has given life imprisonment to Shafiur Rahman Farabi. Major Zia and Akram Hossain alias Abir alias Adnan alias Hasibul alias Abdullah are absconding.

Prosecutor Golam Sarwar Zakir confirmed the matter. Before the verdict, the four accused were brought to the court from Gazipur’s Kashimpur Central Jail under tight security around 10 am today.

Judge Mojibur Rahman of the anti-terrorism tribunal on February 4 fixed the date of today’s verdict after hearing the arguments of the accused and the state.

According to the case file, the miscreants hacked to death Avijit Roy in the TSC area of ​​Dhaka University on February 26, 2015 at around 9:15 pm. Avijit’s wife Bonya Ahmed was also seriously injured at that time. Avijit’s father Professor Ajay Roy filed a case with the Shahbagh Police Station on February 27, 2015.
