Hussain Muhammad Ershad fell on this day in 1990 in the face of a mass uprising in the final stages of the long nine-year anti-dictatorship movement.
On that day, the then President Hussain Muhammad Ershad was forced to hand over power to a non-partisan caretaker government as per the outline of the three alliances. Nur Hossain, Selim, Delwar, Tajul, Dr. Milon, Nurul Huda, Babul, Fattah and many others lost their lives in this movement.
Different political parties and socio-cultural organizations celebrate the day through various programs. Awami League is celebrated as Democracy Liberation Day and the fall of dictatorship.
In a message issued on the occasion, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina conveyed her heartfelt greetings to the vigilant guardians of democracy. She called upon all to work hard for the development of the country and the welfare of the people by building a hunger-free and happy-prosperous golden Bangladesh of Bangabandhu’s dream by resisting all anti-democratic conspiracies.
The Prime Minister said the Awami League has played a responsible role in safeguarding democracy and suffrage in the next three decades. Her government has been working tirelessly since 2009 to stop the culture of impunity and institutionalize democracy in the country.
“We are committed to upholding democracy, the constitution, the rule of law and human rights,” she said.
