EC officials will go to 40 countries to collect information on expatriates

Tk. 100 crore has been allocated for data collection of expatriates to provide smart national identity card (NID card). Election Commission officials will go to 40 countries for this.

The information was given by Planning Commission member Abul Kalam Azad after a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) held at the NEC conference room in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Tuesday.

The ECNEC meeting approved the Election Commission Secretariat’s ‘Identification System for Enhancing Access to Services (IDEA) (Phase II)’ project. The Prime Minister presided over the meeting by joining the video conference from Ganabhaban.

After the meeting, Abul Kalam Azad said that smart NID cards will be provided to the expatriates under the IDEA project. As if it is easy to get their services abroad. Election Commission officials will return after collecting information on expatriates.

Later, the Bangladesh Embassy will deliver the smart NID card to their address in the respective country.

The planning commission member further said that under this scheme, smart NID cards will be given to those above 14 years of age.

According to the Election Commission’s plan, by 2025, smart NID cards will be issued to more than 170 crore and 73 lakhs citizens over the age of 14.
