Hilsa catch is forbidden for 22 days from October 14

Hilsa catch is forbidden for 22 days from October 14.In the interest of protection of mother hilsa during the main breeding season, hilsa catching, selling, stocking and transporting will be prohibited for 22 days from Wednesday (October 14 to November 04).

Fisheries and Livestock Minister Sham Rezaul Karim said this at a press conference on the occasion of ‘Mother Hilsa Conservation Campaign-2020’ at the Secretariat on Monday. He said that in order to protect mother hilsa, considering the scientific breeding time, the period of ban on hilsa harvesting has been increased to 22 days by amending the Fisheries Conservation Act based on the full moon of Ashwin month.

Six days back from last year, all types of fishing have been banned in the sanctuaries since October 14.

Total 5,650 metric ton of VGF rice has been allocated for 2,82,500 families in 41 upazilas of six districts of Barisal division.

Meanwhile, at a press conference, the minister said, ‘Illegal attempts to extract hilsa in the country’s river will not be allowed. No one will be allowed to fish in the river where mother hilsa exist.’

In addition to patrolling by the Naval Police and the Coast Guard, it will be monitored in a sophisticated way so that no boat or ship can catch hilsa. Even if a mechanical fishing boat arrives from abroad, it will be detained in a legal process.

Minister Sham Rezaul further said, “I want to bring back the abundance, taste and availability of Hilsa to Bangladesh. The size and taste of Hilsa is much better this time as compared to other years. Hilsa was once scarce, but it is now within the reach of the mass people. One of the reasons for this is that under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock and various departments and institution under it, the Naval Police, the Coast Guard and the field administratio are working together.
