Adib is the new Prime Minister of Lebanon!Mustafa Adib, Lebanon’s ambassador to Germany, is set to become the country’s new prime minister after a horrific explosion at a Beirut port over chemical stockpiles. In Lebanon’s communal political system, the country’s prime minister will be a Sunni Muslim. Meanwhile, the country’s main Sunni political party, the Future Movement, has backed Adib as prime minister.
Earlier this month, a bomb blast near the capital, Beirut, killed at least 190 people and displaced more than 300,000, prompting the government to resign. Lebanon is facing its biggest economic crisis since the 1975-90 civil war, when its main port collapsed. Mustafa Adib is going to take the responsibility in such a critical moment.
Adiber could be named Lebanese prime minister ahead of French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Beirut on Monday if there are no last-minute complications.
The Future Movement, led by former Prime Minister Saad Hariri, backed the ambassador at a parliamentary coalition meeting on Sunday. Shiite political party Hezbollah and its ally the Amal Movement are also accepting Mustafa Adib as prime minister, a top Shiite leader in the country has said.
Hezbollah-backed Christian President Michel Aoun will have to nominate a new prime minister on Monday with the most support among lawmakers. Then the process of forming a new government will begin. Until the new administration is formed, the caretaker government will be in the hands of the Diab government.
