UNESCO will jointly celebrate Mujib Year

UNESCO will jointly celebrate Mujib Year. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said , ‘The time was declared from March 17,2020 to March 26, 2021, on the birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’.

To celebrate the birth anniversary of Bangabandhu in due dignity, programmes have been taken at national, international and local level. In continuation of the programme, UNESCO will celebrate the birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman jointly with UNESCO Bangladesh.

Prime Minister said that in recognition of her unique contribution to the upliftment of education, culture, science, technology and freedom of speech, UNESCO in 2021 jointly decided to celebrate the birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman jointly with Bangladesh. As a nation, this is a great news for us.

The Prime Minister made the remarks during a question-and-answer question addressed by the Dhaka-11 constituent parliamentarian AKM Rahmatullah during the question-and-answer session scheduled for the Prime Minister in the Jatiya Sangsad on Wednesday.

The Prime Minister highlighted the steps taken at home and abroad on the birth anniversary of Bangabandhu and said that under the ‘Biennial Anniversary Programme’, UNESCO celebrates the 50th or above 50th,100th and 150th anniversary of the birth of a special event or a prominent person. Under this programme, UNESCO has adopted three anniversary celebrations for 2020-2021. One of which is the celebration of the birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Sheikh Hasina said, ‘One of the conditions for UNESCO’s special event or the birth anniversary of a prominent person is to make that incident or that person’s special contribution to the promotion of education, culture, science and technology and freedom of speech in UNESCO. When a country appeals in this regard, it is celebrated by UNESCO when it is accepted at a general meeting’.

She added, ‘A committee comprising representatives of the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education, Information Ministry and Culture under the leadership of the Bangladesh UNESCO National Commission, inaugurated the birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with the help of Bangladesh Embassy with my consent’.

A proposal to jointly celebrate UNESCO’s birth anniversary with UNESCO on April 27 was approved by the UNESCO Executive Board at the UNESCO 40th Meeting. Then on November 14, the UNESCO General Meeting, the 8th session of the program and the budget authorities were sent to the Commission for final approval. It was finalized in the Plenary Session on 25 November.

The Prime Minister further said that UNESCO recognized Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as sponsor of education, science and technology and arts and literature and in 2020 decided to jointly celebrate its birth anniversary.

The unique contribution of Bangabandhu to various issues has been especially considered in this decision-making. In particular, UNESCO has considered Bangabandhu’s contribution in the promotion of Bangabandhu’s awareness about the rights of the students from school life and subsequently the various initiatives taken to develop the cultural heritage and culture of Bangladesh for the socio-economic development of the country.

It should be noted that Bangabandhu was not a political leader but a symbol of the rights of the common people. This decision was recognized by UNESCO for ensuring the education of the people of Bengal, preserving the culture and heritage of Bengal and the struggle and initiative of science and technology-oriented Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
