‘United States probably invited weak democratic countries to the conference’

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen has claimed that the United States had invited weak democratic countries to the first phase of the Conference on Democracy and that’s why Bangladesh was not invited.

He made the demand while talking to reporters after a discussion meeting on climate change at Dhaka University on Thursday.

At that time, the Foreign Minister said, ‘Stable democracy has been prevailing in Bangladesh for the last few years. This is a very transparent democracy. People are able to vote freely and fairly.’

‘If there is a will there is a way and from that point of view our condition is much better,’ he added.

US President Joe Biden has called for a conference on virtual democracy on January 9 and 10.

110 countries of the world have been invited.

Although Bangladesh was not invited to the conference, India, Pakistan and Nepal were invited from South Asia.

Foreign Minister Momen, however, said that the parameters on which the countries were invited were a matter for the United States.

He does not agree that Bangladesh has been excluded from the conference.

He said, ‘They will hold this conference in two phases. This year and next year. A few countries will join in the first phase. We may be invited to the second phase.’

Referring to the United States as an important development partner of Bangladesh, Momen said, “We should think about how our democracy will work. We will not follow the advice of others.

We do not act on the advice of others. We work for the welfare of the people. We are constantly trying to develop democracy.”
