7.5 Lacs People Are Visually Impaired

Health Minister said, ‘7.5 Lacs People Are Visually Impaired’.In Bangladesh, there are currently more than 700,000 people who are visually impaired and more than 60 lacs people with vision impairment. About 220 million people now suffer from vision impairment worldwide. There are at least one hundred million people whose problems could have been prevented if timely measures were taken.

The World Health Organization (WHO) ‘The World Report on Vision’ reports.

The report was released at a ceremony organized by Bangladesh National Council for the Blind Meeting-2020 at a hotel in Gulshan, Dhaka on Sunday January 19th.

The report says population growth and aging, lifestyle changes and urbanization will dramatically increase the number of people suffering from eye problems, vision impairment and blindness in the coming decades.

Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Malek said, “The eye care center will be set up by the Community Vision Center in 64 districts in the country by 2020.”

The Health Minister also said, “There are currently 700,000 blind people in Bangladesh. There are more than 60 million other eye problems. Diabetes is increasing day by day due to lack of physical labour, problems of the eyes of the people are increasing. Children also have eye problems due to lack of play space. With the help of all kinds of treatment for the eyes of the people, there can be no deficit in our initiative. Therefore, this year, community vision centers will be set up in each of the upazilas, including pediatricians, in four districts of the country. ”

The meeting was chaired by the Director General of the Department of Health, Dr. Abul Kalam Azad, and Secretary of Health Services Md. Asadul Islam, Chairman of the Community Clinic Health Assistance Trust, Prof. Dr. Syed Modaschir Ali, Director General of Health Education, Dr. Ehsan H. Line Director of Eye Care and National Ophthalmology Institute and Ha Dr. Golam Mostafa, director of the hospital.
