BRAC founder Sir Fazle Hassan Abed is no more

Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, the founder of the private company BRAC, is no more. He left his last breath at Apollo Hospital at Bashundhara in the capital on Friday, December 20 at 8.28 pm.

Asif Saleh, executive director of BRAC, confirmed this. He will be buried at Banani Cemetery after the funeral at the Army Stadium on Sunday, Dec 22 at noon.

At the time of his death Fazle Hasan Abed was 83 years old. He is survived by a wife, a daughter, a son and three grandchildren.

Fazle Hassan Abed was born in 1936. After independence, he founded the non-governmental organization BRAC. He was only 36 years old then. He served as the executive director of the company for 65 yrs . He was then elected chairperson by the then Board of Directors of BRAC. He was later elected chairperson of the board of careers of BRAC International.

After the liberation war, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed established BRAC in a northeastern region through a small relief operation in the northeast of Bangladesh. In the last 47 years, BRAC has become one of the largest and most effective private development organizations in the world, with a role in improving the quality of life of at least 10 million people around the world.

The company’s operations are spread across eight countries in Asia and Africa. BRAC also has affiliate offices in the US and UK.

Fazle Hasan Abed, who spread the name of Bangladesh worldwide through various activities of BRAC, has received numerous honors and awards.

He also holds awards such as the World Food Prize, Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau, Spanish Order of Merit, International Gold Medal. He was also named to Fortune Magazine’s two Global Leaders list twice this decade.
