Attack on independent chairman candidate in Chandpur

Independent chairman candidate of Fatehpur East Union Parishad in Matlab Uttar Upazila of Chandpur Nurul Islam Patwary has been attacked. The people of the independent chairman candidate alleged that the people of the boat candidate of the union and the current chairman Ajmal Hossain Chowdhury carried out the attack. At least six people from both sides, including the chairman candidate, were reported injured. Seriously injured Nurul Islam Patwary has been admitted to Matlab Uttar Upazila Health Complex.

The incident took place at Saheb Bazar of the union around 10 am on Sunday, November 14.

Police said that when Nurul Islam Patwary went to the Saheb Bazar area on Sunday morning to campaign for his symbol, the activists supporting the boat candidate suddenly attacked him with sticks and indigenous weapons. Several people including Nurul Islam, former chairman Golam Nabi Badal and activist Muzammel Haque were injured.

Former chairman Golam Nabi Badal said, “We were campaigning on the side of the road on the slope of the bridge in Saheb Bazar. Suddenly Ajmal Hossain Chowdhury’s men came and attacked us. I was hit and fell down the road. But they have beaten up the chairman candidate Nurul Islam Patwary. I rescued him and brought him to the hospital. He also said that a legal process is underway in this regard.

In this regard, the candidate of the boat and the current chairman Ajmal Hossain Chowdhury said, ‘Yesterday my staffs are campaigning in that area. They came today and rehearsed to take control of the area and insulted my people. At one point they attacked my staff. 2-3 of my workers and supporters were injured. Legal action is being taken in this case.’

Matlab Uttar Police Station OC Shahjahan Kamal said, “We have heard the news of the clash. However, no complaint has been received from anyone yet. Legal action will be taken if any complaint is received. He said police had been deployed in the area to keep the situation normal.”
