Chinese Government Has Ordered Closure Of US Consulate

The Chinese government has ordered the closure of the US consulate in the southwestern city of Chengdu. Beijing issued the directive on Friday (July 24).

The report said Beijing issued the order in response to the closure of the Chinese consulate in Houston, USA.

Tensions between the United States and China have been high on a number of issues recently. The United States has ordered the closure of the Chinese consulate in Houston by Friday (July 24th) in a bid to “protect American intellectual property.” China has threatened retaliation, calling the move a “political provocation.” The US consulate in Chengdu was then ordered to close.

In a statement, the Chinese Foreign Ministry blamed the United States for the deteriorating relations between the two countries.

It added that the new directive was a necessary and legitimate response to the United States’ unsolicited move.

Founded in 1985 in Chengdu, the US Consulate employs more than 200 people.
