The death toll from Hurricane Laura has risen to 14 in the United States. The cyclone hit the southern part of the country. The cyclone killed at least 10 people in Louisiana and four in Texas.
The storm that hit the southwest on Thursday, local time, is the strongest storm to hit the United States this year. The strong winds blew away the roofs of many houses in the Lake Charles area, shattering glass doors and windows.
The wind speed during the cyclone was 150 miles per hour or 240 kilometers per hour. It has caused extensive damage. The storm left at least 285,000 people in Louisiana and Texas without power.
Louisiana Governor John Bell Edwards has called on the federal government to provide urgent assistance in repairing the damage caused by the cyclone.
US President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Louisiana and Texas on Saturday. A White House statement said President Trump would meet with people affected by the cyclone.
The Red Cross said the cyclone had damaged about 8,000 homes in the two states. About 1,500 members of the National Guard have been deployed to rescue and assist the people.
Laura has lost some strength now. However, heavy rains are continuing in different states due to the impact of this storm. Meanwhile, Hurricane Marco and Laura hit Haiti, killing at least 31 people so far.
