Atiqul and Tapas nominated as party’s candidate

Atiqul Islam has been nominated to the ruling Awami League for the post of Mayor in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) elections. Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas has been nominated as the party’s candidate for the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election.

The general secretary of the party and the Minister of Road Transport and Bridge Obaidul Quader announced the names of the candidates at the political office of the Awami League president in Dhanmondi on Sunday,December 29.

Atiqul Islam was optimistic about getting a nomination this time in Dhaka North. On the premature departure of popular Mayor Anisul Haque, he won by a large margin in the by-elections.

Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas, son of Awami League founder Fazlul Huq Moni.He is the younger brother of current chairman of juba Sheikh Fazle Shams Paresh.

Few leaders of the party said, ‘The South City Corporation weakness in dealing with the dengue situation this year revealed a negative impact on the image of the Mayor as well as the government. Many people denounced the mayor’s failure with dengue .He was also criticized across the country for his controversial comments on dengue. Earlier,he was also criticized for failing to project a dustbin along the roads of Dhaka city.

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader said at a recent press conference that those who are controversial in the Dhaka North and South City Corporation elections will not be nominated. We will nominate candidates who are above the debate, who do not have a record of misconduct.

Concerned that Saeed Khokan was not nominated this time because of controversial action. Although he once more wanted the opportunity.Tapas was nominated for the post of mayor of DSCC.

It is to be noted that the Dhaka City Corporation was divided into two parts – North and South – on 29 November,2011 to enhance the quality of services . About four years later, elections were held in two cities. In that election, two Awami League candidates, Anisul Haque and Mohammad Saeed Khokon, elected as mayor. Dhaka North City Mayor Anisul Haque died on November 30,2017 while undergoing treatment at Wellington Hospital in London.

Md. Atikul islam was elected as the Awami League candidate in the Dhaka North City by-elections on February 28 this year. He was sworn in on March 7.

Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas, the younger son of the late Sheikh Fazlul Huq Moni, is the nephew of Bangabandhu, the nominee of the Awami League in Dhaka South City Corporation. He is the Member Secretary of the Bangabandhu Awami Lawyers Council.
