Production target of mustard in Chandpur is 5 thousand MT.Chandpur is one of the major riverine agricultural areas of the country. The rivers Meghna, Padma, Meghna, Dhanagoda and Dakatia flow through the district and produce a large crop in the river basin for agricultural production. Mustard is cultivated and produced extensively in the Arakas along the river banks.
There are 11 isolated chars on the west bank of the Meghna. In Chandpur, paddy, jute, potato, soybean, onion, garlic and maize are followed by mustard. This year, Chandpur has set a production target of 4,500 metric tons of mustard and the cultivation target is 4,900 hectares of land.
Chandpur farmers are cultivating mustard on a large scale due to favorable climate, transportation facilities, interest of farmers in mustard cultivation, provision of production technology by the agriculture department, improved communication system, availability of agricultural inputs, advice of agriculturists on seeds, fertilizers and pesticides, agricultural loans from banks.
Especially in the char areas of Chandpur, farmers cultivate and produce mustard extensively. Unfortunately, the banks are not giving agricultural loans to the farmers in the char areas as they are on the banks of the river.
The chars are Matlab Chariliot, Char Qasim, Sabji Kandi, Zahirabad, Sashtakhand Borochar, Rajrajeswar of Chandpur Sadar, Jahajmara, Lagnimara, Banshgari, Chirarchar, Fatehjangpur, Ishanbala of Haimchar, Majhjibar, Chargajibar, Chargajibar. Mustard is cultivated in large quantities.
According to sources in the Department of Agricultural Extension, Farm House, Chandpur, the cultivation target in Chandpur Sadar is 310 hectares and the production target is 434 MT. In the north, 1,335 hectares have been cultivated and the production target has been set at 1,869 MT.
The target is to cultivate 610 hectares in the south and the production target is 854 MT. Cultivation in Hajiganj is 415 hectares and production target has been set at 581 MT.
Cultivation in Shahrashti is 225 hectares and production target has been set at 315 MT. Cultivation in Kachua is 380 hectares and production target is set at 530 MT.
Cultivation in Faridganj is 150 hectares and production target has been set at 210 MT and cultivation in Haimchar is 75 hectares and production target has been set at 105 MT.
Sonali, Agrani, Janata and Krishi Banks, the four state-owned banks in the district, have disbursed Tk. 54 lakh this year as loans for cultivation of pulses, oil, spices and maize, according to the regional offices of the banks.
