Sand dredging in Meghna river in Chandpur will be stopped from March 01

Deputy Commissioner of Chandpur Anjana Khan Majlish has said that the dredging of sand in the Meghna river in Chandpur will be stopped from March 01. She confirmed the matter on Thursday night, February 24.

“Our decision to stop the dredger is final,” she said.

“For the time being, the dredger will be closed for two months. Will think permanently later. Letters will be sent in this regard to the dredger owners.

She further said that due to dredgers, the breeding of Hilsa spoiled. Child Hilsa cannot roam freely into the river. That is why it has been decided to stop the dredger.

The Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute has also been asked to take steps to stop dredgers permanently to protect hilsa. At the District Taskforce meeting, everyone agreed that the dredger should be completely shut down.

We will take appropriate measures to protect the Hilsa.”
