202 crore taka project to increase domestic fish production.Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said, “We will preserve everything that is indigenous, plants and animals. There is a project with snails, oysters have to be brought. Crabs must also be brought. We have to use every animal and aquatic resource that we have in Bangladesh.”

The Prime Minister said this while addressing a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday. It was informed at the meeting that Bangladesh is now in the fourth position in fish production. The government has approved a new project at a cost of Tk. 202 crore to increase fish production in the country. The meeting also approved a project titled ‘Conservation of Indigenous Species fish and Snails’.

The Prime Minister and ECNEC Chairperson Sheikh Hasina presided over the ECNEC meeting in a video conference from Ganabhaban. Planning Minister MA Mannan was present at Ganabhaban at the time. The rest of the ECNEC members were in the NEC conference room at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital.

The ECNEC meeting approved four projects including the development of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park. The total cost of implementation is estimated at Tk. 534 crore. Of this, Tk. 441 crore will be spent from government funds and Tk. 93 crore from development partners.

At the press conference, the planning minister said that besides snails, the Prime Minister has also directed to conserve oysters.She said if the Bangabandhu Safari Park needs further expansion, the government will provide land.

The planning minister said a risk map would be prepared for Dhaka to assess the seismic risk, which would show how much an area is at risk of earthquakes. He said initiatives have been taken to overcome the housing crisis of Rajshahi University students. The project titled ‘Development of Physical Infrastructure of Rajshahi University’ has been approved for this. As a result, women’s participation in higher education will increase. He said snails and native fish would be conserved as well as all native animals in phases. Because the country has become independent, freedom should be for all creatures, not just for human beings.

The four projects approved by ECNEC yesterday are Urban Resilience Project (RAJUK) at a cost of Tk. 107 crore, development of physical infrastructure of Rajshahi University at a cost of TK. 147 crore, conservation and development of native species of fish and snails at a cost of Taka 202 crore and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park at a cost of TK. 78 crore, Gazipur Approach Road Widening and other necessary infrastructure development projects.
