Imprisonment of 10 fishermen for violating ban in Chandpur

A mobile court has sentenced 10 fishermen to one-year imprisonment for violating the ban on catching mother Hilsa in Chandpur Meghna river sanctuary area. The task force seized two motorized boats and one lakh meters of banned current nets on Thursday morning.

Chandpur Sadar Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Helal Uddin Chowdhury handed down the sentence to the fishermen.

The convicted fishermen are Nasir Hossain (30), Shafiqul Islam (20), Abdus Sukkur Gazi (20), Khokon Bepari (23), Faruk Darji (30), and Monir Hawlader (20) of Lalpur and Kherudia areas of Bishnapur union of Chandpur Sadar Upazila. Md. Faruk Khan (32), Md. Nasir (29), Awal Hawladar (63) and Golam Md. Russell (23).

According to the District Fisheries Officer’s Office, two engine-driven boats and one lakh meters of banned current nets were seized from the Meghna River on Thursday morning in a campaign to protect mother Hilsa. At that time, 10 fishermen were arrested for catching Hilsa.

Chandpur Sadar Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Sudip Bhattacharya said the arrested fishermen were sent to jail after being sentenced to one-year imprisonment each. The seized nets were destroyed and the two boats were placed in the custody of the Coast Guard and the Fisheries Department.

Chandpur Sadar Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Helal Uddin Chowdhury said the district administration would continue its campaign to protect the national resource Hilsa breeding.
